How Strategy Smiles in Execution: How ECU Psychology Students Transformed Employee Engagement at Rec Alley

Strategy only matters when it’s executed – and executed well. At Brandself, we believe the real magic of strategy lives not in the planning decks, but in the people who bring it to life. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight a recent collaboration between Rec Alley, Practera, and Edith Cowan University Psychology students – a story of strategy turning into transformation.

The Challenge:
Rec Alley faced an all-too-familiar issue: employee engagement scores were low, leadership clarity was unclear, and internal communication needed a boost. Rather than look outward for consultants, Rec Alley looked to fresh talent through Practera’s virtual industry projects, partnering with ECU psychology students to uncover human-centred insights.

The Process:
Guided by The Smiling Strategist, the student team dove deep into organisational psychology and leadership strategy. Their research and recommendations were practical, focused, and most importantly, actionable. They advised Rec Alley to:

  • Restructure leadership for clarity and accountability.
  • Introduce regular feedback mechanisms.
  • Invest in professional development.
  • Strengthen communication across teams.

The Results:
Twelve months after implementation, the numbers told the story of true strategic execution:

  • Employee eNPS: rose from –19 to +35.5
  • Leadership clarity: improved by 35%
  • Customer NPS: tripled in several locations

Rec Alley CEO Ozren Vukelic summed it up:

“The students’ insights shaped our management structure and culture. The results speak for themselves.”

The Takeaway:
This is what strategy that smiles looks like – ideas turned into impact through collaboration, execution, and learning. For Practera and ECU students, it’s proof that work-integrated learning isn’t just an academic exercise; it’s a launchpad for meaningful change. For Rec Alley, it’s a reminder that investing in people is always a winning strategy.
