Think like a mountain in brand strategy.
While recovering from a recent hospitalisation and working from home, I came across something soothing to the heart.
“Think like a mountain.
We should think like a mountain, recognising not just our needs or those of our fellow humans, but those of the entire natural world. Aldo implies that often we miss the broader implications of our actions, only considering the immediate benefit to ourselves. To think like a mountain means identifying with the wider environment and being aware of its role in our lives. Instead of viewing the world with a kind of detachment, we must find our place in nature, by acknowledging the intrinsic value of all elements of the world we inhabit.” – American ecologist Aldo Leopold in The Sand County Almanac and Arne Naess.
Aldo Leopold’s idea of the “ecological self” challenges us to see beyond our own immediate needs and recognise the interconnected web of life. Every decision we make, every action we take, ripples through an ecosystem far larger than ourselves.

This mindset is transformative. Too often, brands focus narrowly on short-term wins: quarterly profits, quick engagement, fleeting trends.
But I believe enduring brands think like a mountain:
1. They consider the long-term impact of their actions on culture, community, and the planet.
2. They recognize their place in a broader ecosystem: customers, competitors, partners, and the environment all form part of their story.
3. They create value not just for themselves, but for the world they inhabit.
A brand that thinks like a mountain doesn’t just sell. It sustains.
It understands that its true power lies not in dominating the landscape, but in harmonising with it.
Here’s my question to get you thinking:
Is your brand making choices for the next quarter, or the next century?
